What is a Freeskier?

To me, freeskiing is embodied by those amazing moments slashing around the mountain on your skis, free from any constraints, free to “let ‘er rip!” Whether it’s learning new tricks in the terrain park or shredding pow, it doesn’t matter a great deal what we are doing on our skis, freeskiing is more a way of life, an expression of who we are on skis. Freeskiers live and breathe for skiing. We can charge any terrain and love most conditions, because as long as we are on our skis there really are no bad days on the mountain. I used to think that riding park and pipe defined someone as a freeskier. I was cool with that because that’s what I love, but after I stopped competing, I realized that there is so much more to being a freeskier than riding park, the whole mountain is our playground and there is a lot of fun to be had out there. A freeskier doesn’t just see a mountain, a freeskier sees a canvas full of opportunity to get creative with nature. It doesn’t matter so much which line we choose to create as much as it matters how much fun we have while skiing. We all have our own way of getting down the mountain and our own version of what it means to be a freeskier, and it is that freedom of expression that collectively defines us. It’s the hunger for a powder day in the middle of summer or that depressed feeling on the last day of the ski season, no matter how you like to get down the mountain, I think as freeskiers we all agree that winter is where it’s at!
